The Las Nubes EcoCampus offers courses with a community-based experiential approach that provide collaborative learning opportunities for students. The emphasis is on experiential education, building on long-standing relationships with diverse communities in Southern Costa Rica, including women’s organizations, agricultural co-operatives and producers, environmental protection and social justice groups, and Indigenous communities.
York University students from the Faculties of Environmental Studies, Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, Health and the Schulich School of Business weren’t afraid to be outside getting their hands dirty this summer at the Maloca Community Garden. The students were taking part in a unique experiential education course focused on urban community gardening and sustainability.
This past summer, students in the Faculty of Environmental Studies participated in a new career-focused course, Professional Development in the Environmental Sector: Preparation for Experiential Work Placement. Designed to prepare third- and fourth-year students to find work placement opportunities, the course helps students acquire new lifelong professional skills and gain competitive advantages for when they begin their career search.
A new report published by the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice, a research organization based at York’s Osgoode Hall Law School, provides extensive evidence that spending money on justice services and programs results in financial returns that far outweigh the cost of the investments.
York University will be installing a bird-friendly, dot-patterned window treatment at several key sites on the Keele Campus to make the windows more visible to migrating birds and reduce bird deaths. York is one of the first universities in Ontario and among the first in Canada to install a bird safety film to the windows of key older buildings known for a higher number of bird deaths.
York University President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton hosted a University Town Hall meeting last Thursday at the Keele Campus. The purpose of the Town Hall was to update faculty, staff and students on the progress made in 2018-19 on the University Academic Plan and the strategic opportunities identified for 2019-20.
York University will award honorary degrees at Fall Convocation to: Steven Campbell, president of Lifford Wine & Spirits; Margot Franssen, founder, former president and partner of the Body Shop Canada; Dionne Brand, poet, novelist and essayist; and Trina McQueen, broadcast media trailblazer and York’s first Visiting Professor in Broadcast Management.
The Experiential Education Symposium at York University, on Jan. 21 and 22, 2020, will celebrate and showcase the achievements of students who have participated in experiential education activities. Students who want to present a poster at the symposium have until Nov. 4 to apply.
On Jan. 1, 2020, Jenifer Papararo will join York University as the director/curator of the Art Gallery of York University. Papararo comes to York from the Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art on the campus of the University of Winnipeg, where she has held the position of executive director for the past five years.
The deadline to submit nominations for the President’s Research Awards is Friday, Nov. 22. All nominations must be received by 4:30 p.m. Nomination forms and information on the criteria for each award category can be found on the Senate Committee on Awards website.
