Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to inform the York community that we have successfully concluded the search for the next vice-provost and dean, Graduate Studies.
The search committee, chaired by Provost and Vice-President Academic Lisa Philipps and comprised of graduate-affiliated faculty, staff and students from across the University, undertook a thorough internal search process which attracted excellent candidates. On June 27, the Board of Governors concurred with my recommendation that Alice MacLachlan be appointed to the position of vice-provost and dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies for an initial period of five years, commencing on July 1, 2023.
Dr. MacLachlan is associate professor in the Department of Philosophy, in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, where she has been a faculty member since 2007. An experienced graduate supervisor with an established scholarly record and an active interdisciplinary research agenda, Dr. MacLachlan has served two terms as graduate program director for philosophy and is a full member of the graduate faculty at York. She has also taken on academic and administrative leadership roles beyond the department of philosophy, including serving for two years as Chair of SexGen York, a member of the President’s Advisory Council on Human Rights, and two terms as Chair of the LA&PS Petitions Committee.
Dr. MacLachlan’s research considers apologies and moral repair; civility and injustice; and family ethics, focusing especially on LGBTQ+ families, also looking at the broader politics of sexuality. She is co-editor of Feminist Philosophy Quarterly, has published widely in the top journals in her field and, alongside her scholarly research, has contributed extensively to public conversations about philosophical research on television, radio, newspapers and other media. Her current SSHRC-funded research project is entitled “Civility and Solidarity.”
With extensive administrative service experience in the department of philosophy, at York University and in her profession, Dr. MacLachlan was honoured in 2017 with the York LA&PS Award for Distinction in Research, Emerging Researcher category, and was awarded a York-Massey Fellowship in 2013 and the President’s University-Wide Teaching Award in 2011. She is committed to the scholarly and professional mentorship of graduate students and has developed extensive resources and offered many programs to foster their success inside and beyond the academy.
I would like to thank the members of the search committee for their contributions to this important process. I am deeply grateful to Thomas Loebel, who has ably served the role of dean and AVP, Faculty of Graduate Studies for the past five years.
I look forward to working with Dr. MacLachlan as she brings her energy and expertise to this important role. I hope that all members of the York University community will join me in congratulating and welcoming her as a core member of the University’s academic leadership team as the Faculty of Graduate Studies continues to lead in the advocacy for and training of graduate and postdoctoral students and studies in Canada and internationally.

J’ai le plaisir d’informer la communauté de York que la recherche de la prochaine vice-rectrice et doyenne, Études supérieures a été couronnée de succès.
Le comité de recherche, présidé par Lisa Philipps, rectrice et vice-présidente aux affaires académiques, et composé de membres du corps professoral, du personnel et de la communauté étudiante à l’échelle de l’Université, a entrepris un processus de recherche interne approfondi qui a permis d’attirer d’excellentes candidatures. Le 27 juin, le conseil d’administration a approuvé ma recommandation de nommer Mme Alice MacLachlan au poste de vice-rectrice et doyenne, Études supérieures, pour une période initiale de cinq ans, à compter du 1er juillet 2023.
Mme MacLachlan est professeure agrégée au Département de philosophie de la Faculté d’arts libéraux et d’études professionnelles où elle enseigne depuis 2007. Superviseure expérimentée de diplômés, avec un dossier académique bien établi et un programme de recherche interdisciplinaire actif, Mme MacLachlan a assuré deux mandats en tant que responsable pédagogique du programme d’études supérieures en philosophie et est membre à part entière de la Faculté d’études supérieures de l’Université York. Elle a également assumé des rôles de leadership académique et administratif en dehors du Département de philosophie, notamment en tant que présidente de SexGen York pendant deux ans, a fait partie du Conseil consultatif de la présidente sur les droits de la personne, et a présidé le Comité des pétitions de LA&PS pendant deux mandats.
Les recherches de Mme MacLachlan portent sur les excuses et la réparation morale, la civilité et l’injustice, ainsi que sur l’éthique familiale, avec une concentration sur les familles LGBTQ+, mais aussi sur les politiques plus larges de la sexualité. Elle est corédactrice de Feminist Philosophy Quarterly, a publié de nombreux articles dans les meilleures revues de son domaine et, parallèlement à ses recherches universitaires, a largement contribué aux conversations publiques sur la recherche philosophique à la télévision, à la radio, dans les journaux et dans d’autres médias. Son projet de recherche actuel, financé par le CRSH, s’intitule Civility and Solidarity.
Forte d’une longue expérience administrative au Département de philosophie, à l’Université York et dans sa profession, Mme MacLachlan a reçu en 2017 le York LA&PS Award for Distinction in Research, dans la catégorie de chercheuse émergente, ainsi qu’une bourse York-Massey en 2013 et le Prix d’enseignement de la présidente de l’Université en 2011. Elle se consacre au mentorat universitaire et professionnel des diplômés, a développé de vastes ressources et a offert de nombreux programmes pour favoriser leur réussite dans le monde académique et au-delà.
Je tiens à remercier les membres du comité de recrutement pour leur contribution à cet important processus. Je suis profondément reconnaissante à M. Thomas Loebel, qui a assuré avec compétence le rôle de doyen et VPA de la Faculté des études supérieures au cours des cinq dernières années.

Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to inform the York community that, following a consultation process with staff and faculty in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD), Sarah Bay-Cheng has accepted our invitation to undertake a second five-year term as dean of AMPD, commencing on July 1, 2024. On June 27, the Board of Governors concurred with this recommendation and approved the renewal.
Dr. Bay-Cheng has provided outstanding leadership during her first term. Since her arrival at York University, Dr. Bay-Cheng has spearheaded the development and implementation of a strategic plan for AMPD and led the collegial production of a forward-looking AMPD Equity Plan, with clear alignment to the University’s Decolonization, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion goals. She and her team led significant curriculum renewal initiatives in Integrative Arts, Media Arts, the Creative Technologies program for York’s new Markham Campus, and the development of new upskilling micro-credentials. She has expanded virtual learning options for students while also returning more than 80 per cent of AMPD courses to in-person delivery post-COVID. The success of these and other efforts is reflected in recent enrolment growth in AMPD.
Dr. Bay-Cheng has actively fostered a culture of research, scholarship and creative activity which has supported increased grant applications and funding success within AMPD. She has taken deliberate steps to raise the local and international profile, reputation and rankings of AMPD by engaging with external boards and associations, international peer institutions, public media, and local arts organizations. A signature achievement is York’s 2023 ranking by QS Subjects in the top 100 universities in the world for performing arts. York was one of only four schools in Canada to receive this recognition.
As dean, Bay-Cheng has made important contributions to many University initiatives and conversations, including the Goldfarb Gallery Project Committee, the Global Positioning Group, SSRP Steering Committee, University Fund Council, and CUPE 3903 Joint Committee on Job Stability. She instigated York’s Year of the Arts programming which culminated at the 2023 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, featuring a range of special art exhibits as well as music, dance and theatre performances.
Building on the past priorities and values of the School, Dr. Bay-Cheng envisions growing AMPD’s engagement with the strategic areas of health, media, sustainability and data. The dean seeks to leverage York’s expansion in health related fields to develop complementary programming – for example, in health service design, data visualization, and the arts and wellness, to meet a range of workforce needs in the medical and paramedical professions. She seeks to further support the strong relationships that AMPD has developed with the film and interactive media industries to enhance workforce readiness and career opportunities for AMPD graduates. Dr. Bay-Cheng is committed to increasing fiscal sustainability for AMPD while strengthening and promoting its identity in the national and international landscapes to make it Canada’s leading school for socially engaged artists, designers, performers and thinkers who are committed to connecting globally recognized work with sustained local impact.
I would like to thank the members of the community for their contributions to the reappointment process. I would also like to thank Dr. Bay-Cheng for her work and dedication on behalf of AMPD and her deep commitment to the culture of success and innovation that extends across the university as a whole.

J’ai le plaisir d’informer la communauté de York qu’à l’issue d’un processus de consultation avec le personnel et le corps professoral de l’École des arts, des médias, de l’animation et du design (AMPD), Sarah Bay-Cheng a accepté notre invitation à entreprendre un second mandat de cinq ans en tant que doyenne, à compter du 1er juillet 2024. Le 27 juin, le conseil d’administration a approuvé cette recommandation de renouvellement.
Mme Bay-Cheng a fait preuve d’un leadership remarquable au cours de son premier mandat. Depuis son arrivée à l’Université York, elle a dirigé l’élaboration et la mise en œuvre d’un plan stratégique pour l’AMPD ainsi que la production collégiale d’un plan d’équité axé sur l’avenir et clairement aligné sur les objectifs de décolonisation, d’équité, de diversité et d’inclusion de l’Université. Avec son équipe, elle a mené d’importantes initiatives de renouvellement des programmes d’études dans les domaines des arts globaux, des arts médiatiques, du programme de technologies créatives pour le nouveau campus Markham de York, et a contribué à l’élaboration de nouvelles microcertifications de perfectionnement. Elle a élargi les options d’apprentissage virtuel pour la communauté étudiante tout en ramenant plus de 80 % des cours de l’AMPD à des cours en présentiel après la Covid. Ces succès et plusieurs autres transparaissent dans la croissance récente des inscriptions à l’AMPD.
Mme Bay-Cheng a encouragé activement une culture de recherche, d’érudition et d’activité créative qui a permis d’augmenter le nombre de demandes de subventions et de succès financiers au sein de l’AMPD. Elle a pris des mesures concrètes pour améliorer le profil local et international, la réputation et le classement de l’AMPD en s’engageant auprès de conseils et d’associations externes, d’institutions internationales homologues, de médias publics et d’organisations artistiques locales. L’une des réalisations les plus marquantes est le classement de York en 2023 par QS Subjects parmi les 100 meilleures universités du monde pour les arts de la scène. York est l’une des quatre écoles canadiennes à avoir obtenu cette distinction.
En tant que doyenne, Mme Bay-Cheng a contribué de façon importante à de nombreuses initiatives et conversations universitaires, notamment au comité de projet de la galerie Goldfarb, au Global Positioning Group, au comité directeur du SSRP, au University Fund Council et au comité mixte du SCFP 3903 sur la stabilité de l’emploi. Elle cherche à soutenir davantage les relations solides que l’AMPD a développées avec les industries du film et des médias interactifs afin d’améliorer la préparation de la main-d’œuvre et les opportunités de carrière pour les diplômés de l’AMPD. Mme Bay-Cheng s’engage à accroître la viabilité financière de l’AMPD tout en renforçant et en promouvant son identité dans le paysage national et international afin d’en faire la principale école canadienne pour les artistes, les designers, les interprètes et les esprits socialement engagés qui s’engagent à associer un travail mondialement reconnu à un rayonnement local durable.

I am pleased to inform the York community that, following a consultation process with staff and faculty in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS), J.J. McMurtry has accepted our invitation to undertake a second five-year term as dean of LA&PS, commencing on July 1, 2024. On June 27, the Board of Governors concurred with this recommendation and approved the renewal.
Dr. McMurtry has provided exceptional leadership to the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies in his first term as dean. Under his leadership, the Faculty increased international student enrolments at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and streamlined program delivery, eliminating an accumulated deficit in the Faculty budget and enabling reinvestment in academic priorities set out in a collegially developed Faculty Academic Plan.
LA&PS has consequently been able to increase and renew its faculty complement, improve its student to faculty ratios, enhance student supports and revitalize spaces to improve the student, faculty and staff experience. Research supports were also enhanced for faculty, and Dean McMurtry has worked diligently with units to develop three-year plans to strengthen research, achieving a marked increase in tri-council funding applications and success rates.
Equity, diversity and inclusion commitments have been actioned with new student opportunities, diversified faculty hiring, a new special advisor on Indigenous issues and a special advisor on LA&PS’s Anti-Black Racism Strategy. Dean McMurtry has found new ways to support teaching and learning innovation and student success, including the steady expansion of experiential education opportunities that respond directly to the interests of current students, and the creation of several new programs for the Markham Campus. He was also a driving force behind the establishment of York University’s learning space at IBM Canada’s flagship building in Markham as a site for offering upper-year business programming, laying important groundwork for the new campus.
Dean McMurtry has advanced fundraising, alumni engagement and outreach initiatives to achieve remarkable success in establishing new scholarships, internships and mentoring programs – with a focus on Black, Indigenous and women students. He has made significant contributions to University-level initiatives and committees, including on senior leadership searches, the University Fund Council and labour relations matters. A key priority identified by Dean McMurtry for his next term will be close attention to strategic enrolment management to ensure a positive budget for the Faculty, and as part of this continuing to develop new in-demand programs and improve student experience. He is committed to engaging his colleagues in additional dialogue about priorities for the future, and to promoting a culture of transparency. Research intensification will be a continued priority in order to further build the reputation of LA&PS and York. The dean will also pursue additional space revitalization projects to foster student engagement and to enable 21st century learning, Indigenous learning and collaborative research.
I would like to thank the members of the community for their contributions to the reappointment process. I would also like to thank Dr. McMurtry for his commitment to the success of LA&PS and to supporting a culture of excellence across the York University community.

J’ai le plaisir d’informer la communauté de York qu’à l’issue d’un processus de consultation avec le personnel et le corps professoral de la Faculté d’arts libéraux et d’études professionnelles (LA&PS), J. J. McMurtry a accepté notre invitation à entreprendre un second mandat de cinq ans en tant que doyen, à compter du 1er juillet 2024. Le 27 juin, le conseil d’administration a approuvé cette recommandation de renouvellement.
Au cours de son premier mandat en tant que doyen, M. McMurtry a fait preuve d’un leadership exceptionnel au sein de la Faculté d’arts libéraux et d’études professionnelles. Sous sa direction, la Faculté a augmenté le nombre d’inscriptions d’étudiantes et étudiants internationaux au premier cycle et au cycle supérieur et a rationalisé l’offre de programmes, éliminant ainsi un déficit accumulé au budget et permettant un réinvestissement dans les priorités académiques définies dans le plan académique de la Faculté élaboré collectivement.
LA&PS a donc été en mesure d’augmenter et de renouveler son effectif professoral, d’améliorer le ratio étudiants/professeurs, de renforcer le soutien étudiant et de revitaliser les espaces afin d’améliorer l’expérience de la population étudiante, du corps professoral et du personnel. Le soutien à la recherche a également été renforcé pour le corps professoral. Le doyen McMurtry a travaillé avec diligence avec les unités pour élaborer des plans triennaux visant à consolider la recherche, ce qui a permis d’augmenter sensiblement les demandes de financement aux trois conseils et les taux de réussite.
Les engagements en matière d’équité, de diversité et d’inclusion ont été concrétisés par de nouvelles possibilités pour la population étudiante, l’embauche de professeurs diversifiés, une nouvelle personne-conseil pour les questions autochtones et une autre pour la stratégie de lutte contre le racisme anti-Noirs de LA&PS. Le doyen McMurtry a trouvé de nouvelles façons de soutenir l’innovation en matière d’enseignement, d’apprentissage et de réussite étudiante, notamment en développant régulièrement les possibilités d’éducation expérientielle qui répondent directement aux intérêts de la communauté étudiante actuelle, et en créant plusieurs nouveaux programmes pour le campus Markham. Il a également joué un rôle central dans l’établissement de l’espace d’apprentissage de l’Université York dans le bâtiment phare d’IBM Canada à Markham, en tant que site pour offrir des programmes d’études supérieures en gestion, posant ainsi les bases du nouveau campus.
Le doyen McMurtry a fait progresser la collecte de fonds, l’engagement des diplômés et les initiatives de sensibilisation et a obtenu un succès remarquable dans la mise place de nouvelles bourses, de stages et de programmes de mentorat, tout en mettant l’accent sur les personnes noires et autochtones et les femmes. Il a contribué de manière importante à des initiatives et à des comités au niveau de l’Université, notamment en ce qui concerne la recherche de cadres supérieurs, le University Fund Council et les questions de relations de travail. L’une des principales priorités du doyen McMurtry pour son prochain mandat sera d’accorder une attention particulière à la gestion stratégique des inscriptions afin de garantir un budget positif pour la Faculté et de continuer ainsi à développer de nouveaux programmes très recherchés et d’améliorer l’expérience étudiante. Il s’est engagé à faire participer ses collègues à un nouveau débat sur les priorités pour l’avenir et à promouvoir une culture de la transparence. L’intensification de la recherche sera une priorité constante afin de renforcer la réputation de LA&PS et de York. Le doyen poursuivra également d’autres projets de revitalisation de l’espace afin de favoriser l’engagement étudiant et de permettre l’apprentissage au 21e siècle, l’apprentissage autochtone et la recherche collaborative.

As another incredible Spring Convocation ends, and the 2022-23 academic year concludes, I am pleased to share my reflections and optimism.
The University has successfully advanced its priorities in a variety of ways, but none more important than the decisive actions taken to ensure we grow as a sustainable and inclusive community. York holds a distinct and important space in the post-secondary sector – with impressive academic and research strengths that clearly connect with our commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
York’s Board of Governors is made up of a talented and thoughtful group of volunteers who use their collective skills, wisdom and experience to build on the positive change York is known for. Our governors also support their communities in a variety of meaningful ways – here are just two of many examples that I could cite:
A compassionate physician who has devoted his life and career to global pediatric and neonatal health care, Dr. Narendra Singh was appointed to York’s Board of Governors in February 2019. Dr. Singh is the founder and president of Giving Health to Kids, and acts as an advisor to the Government of Guyana. This past year, Dr. Singh participated in a delegation together with Schulich ExecEd representatives who travelled to Guyana to launch a new Masters Certificate in Hospital Leadership Program customized for Guyana’s hospital administrators. We are so proud of Nar’s extraordinary efforts.
Appointed to the Board of Governors in 2021, Nadine Spencer is the CEO of BrandEQ Group Inc. and serves as president/CEO of the Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA). Ms. Spencer works with various charitable organizations, empowering impoverished and disenfranchised women to achieve prosperity through education and entrepreneurship. She was also recently appointed to the Toronto Police Services Board – lending her voice and mind to an important advisory body.
I know the community joins me in expressing my gratitude to the outgoing board members whose terms have concluded, including Jacques Demers, David Semaan and Jose Etcheverry.
First appointed as a governor in 2015, Jacques Demers has chaired the Investment Committee, chaired the Pension Fund Board of Trustees and was a member of the Executive Committee
Doctoral degree student governor David Semaan was appointed to the Board in 2021 and has served on the Academic Resources Committee and the Investment Committee. Faculty member and Governor Prof. Jose Etcheverry was appointed in 2019 and served on the Investment Committee and Land and Property Committee. Both have made valued contributions to the Board and through their committee work.
I would like to extend a special note of thanks to our former chancellor, the Hon. Gregory Sorbara and acknowledge his many years of service and advocacy for York.
Earlier this year, together with the University’s leadership team, I was delighted to welcome York’s new chancellor, Kathleen Taylor. Ms. Taylor has taken up her official duties during the recent convocation ceremonies, sharing her wisdom and conferring degrees on the many thousands of students crossing the stage at the Glendon and Keele Campuses in June.
On behalf of the Board of Governors, I would like to thank the entire York community – all of those who have been part of the success of our students, enriched our campuses, and advanced university priorities through their work, teaching, research and beyond. Together, we will continue to accomplish great things in service of York.

Alors qu’une autre incroyable remise des diplômes du printemps prend fin, et que l’année universitaire 2022-2023 s’achève, j’ai le plaisir de partager mes réflexions et mon optimisme.
L’Université a réussi à faire avancer ses priorités de diverses manières, mais aucune n’est plus importante que les actions décisives prises pour garantir que nous progressons en tant que communauté durable et inclusive. York occupe une place distincte et importante dans le secteur de l’enseignement supérieur avec des forces impressionnantes en matière d’études et de recherche qui sont clairement liées à notre engagement en faveur de la diversité et de l’inclusion.
Le conseil d’administration de York est composé de bénévoles talentueux et perspicaces qui utilisent leurs compétences collectives, leur sagesse et leur expérience pour susciter les changements positifs qui font la réputation de York. Nos administrateurs soutiennent également leurs communautés de multiples façons. En voici deux exemples parmi tant d’autres :
Médecin compatissant qui a consacré sa vie et sa carrière aux soins de santé pédiatriques et néonataux dans le monde entier, Dr Narendra Singh a été nommé au conseil d’administration de York en février 2019. Il est le fondateur et le président de l’association Giving Health to Kids et joue un rôle de conseiller auprès du gouvernement guyanien. L’année dernière, Dr Singh a participé à une délégation avec des représentants de Schulich ExecEd qui se sont rendus au Guyana pour lancer un nouveau certificat de maîtrise en leadership hospitalier adapté aux membres de la direction d’hôpitaux du Guyana. Ses efforts remarquables nous remplissent de fierté.
Nommée au conseil d’administration en 2021, Nadine Spencer est PDG de BrandEQ Group inc. et présidente-directrice générale de la Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA). Mme Spencer travaille avec diverses organisations caritatives qui donnent aux femmes démunies et privées de leurs droits les moyens d’accéder à la prospérité grâce à l’éducation et à l’esprit d’entreprise. Elle a également été récemment nommée à la Commission des Services de police de Toronto, prêtant sa voix et son expertise à cet important organisme consultatif.
Je sais que la communauté se joint à moi pour exprimer ma gratitude aux membres sortants du conseil d’administration, notamment Jacques Demers, David Semaan et Jose Etcheverry.
Nommé membre du conseil d’administration pour la première fois en 2015, Jacques Demers a présidé le comité d’investissements et le conseil de fiduciaires du fonds de retraite et a siégé au comité de direction.
Le doctorant David Semaan a été nommé au conseil d’administration en 2021 et a siégé au comité des ressources académiques et au comité d’investissements. Le professeur Jose Etcheverry a été nommé au conseil d’administration en 2019 et a siégé au comité d’investissements et au comité des terrains et des propriétés. Tous deux ont apporté une contribution précieuse au conseil d’administration et dans le cadre de leurs activités au sein des comités.
Je tiens à remercier tout particulièrement notre ancien chancelier, l’honorable Gregory Sorbara, pour ses nombreuses années de service et de promotion de York.
Au début de l’année, j’ai eu le plaisir d’accueillir, avec l’équipe dirigeante de l’Université, la nouvelle chancelière de York, Kathleen Taylor. Mme Taylor a pris ses fonctions officielles lors des récentes cérémonies de remise des diplômes, partageant sa sagesse et conférant des diplômes aux milliers d’étudiantes et d’étudiants qui ont foulé la scène sur les campus Glendon et Keele en juin.
Au nom du conseil d’administration, je tiens à remercier l’ensemble de la communauté de York – tous ceux et celles qui ont contribué à la réussite de notre communauté étudiante, ont enrichi nos campus et ont fait avancer les priorités de l’Université grâce à leur travail, leur enseignement, leur recherche et bien plus encore. Ensemble, nous continuerons à accomplir de grandes choses au service de York.

The University secretariat has announced that three students are recipients of this award for the 2022-23 academic year.
Ana Kraljević, Glendon College/Collège universitaire Glendon, BA, bilingual (Hon.), double major in Canadian studies and études françaises/French studies, was selected for her significant and lasting contributions to York governance. Her contributions have included roles as president of the Glendon College Student Union (GCSU), vice-president academic affairs for the GCSU, member of Glendon’s Faculty Council and student senator.
“Faculty members were struck by your dedication to governance, not only by you actively serving in Faculty and Senate roles but by your truly impressive levels of leadership at Glendon and York University,” reads a letter from University Secretary Pascal Robichaud.
The letter goes on to say a fellow student commended Kraljević for her work in being an advocate for student needs by critically looking at issues from different perspectives and acting as a liaison between students and governing
bodies.
Ariana Mah, Glendon College/Collège universitaire Glendon, BA, bilingual (Hon.), political science (international bachelor of arts), was selected for her contributions to the York University Board of Governors, leadership
roles on the Glendon College Student Union and membership of collegial bodies at departmental and Faculty levels.
A letter informing Mah of the award, from Robichaud, says the award recognizes Mah’s dedication to governance in Faculty roles, but also in fostering active student participation. “(Senior members of the faculty administration) were in high praise of your exceptional dedication to Glendon College, notably with your involvement in changes to the grading system and academic honesty policies through your service work, as well as your collegial leadership.”
Mah was commended for her input, diligence, collegiality and genuine interest in these roles and contributions.
Yashna Manek, Faculty of Science, BA (Hon.), double major in mathematics for education and French studies, was chosen as a recipient for significant contributions to governance in the Faculty of Science, Senate and the University as a whole.
Senior members of the faculty administration noted Manek’s “utter dedication to governance, evidenced by your service as a member of the Science Student Caucus, student senator and member of the Senate Appeals Committee,” according to a letter from Robichaud.
Additionally, the letter outlines Manek’s steadfast support to incoming students and prospective students, and was noted for having a profound impact on fellow students.
The award was established in honour of the late Robert Everett, a distinguished senior assistant secretary of the University who made extraordinary contributions supporting University governance for nearly three decades. President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton established the Robert Everett Exceptional Leadership in Student Governance Award in 2018 to recognize and celebrate students and their impact on governance at York University.

The plan was officially approved by the Senate on May 25 after a series of open forums, public consultations and faculty presentations that first began in September 2022, and engaging with over 1,500 York community members.
“As an international leader in purposeful research, York University is a modern and progressive institution ranked among the top universities in the world for its impact on advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” said President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. “York’s reputation for excellence in research and related creative activities is rooted in interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches focused on driving positive change. Our faculty work with local and international partners building cross-sector networks that enhance our efforts to build equitable, inclusive, and sustainable communities. The new research plan lays out York’s strategy for intensifying our scholarly activities over the next five years continuing to propel the University forward as one of the most influential universities in Canada and beyond.”
The plan was developed with the help of an advisory committee made up of members from across the University. It showcases the depth and breadth of research at York and will be utilized beginning this year through to 2028.
“The strategic research plan offers a comprehensive and clear vision for York to grow its global impact and excel in its high standing as a research-intensive university,” said Vice-President Research and Innovation Amir Asif. “York stands ready to further its expertise and leadership in such fields as artificial intelligence, digital cultures, global health, Indigenous futurities, sustainability and more.”
The plan identifies six areas of existing research strengths, in addition to six areas of opportunity for the University to prioritize.

The strategic research plan brings the York community together around a shared vision and is used as a tool by senior administration and the University Secretariat to make decisions about the institution’s research investments, infrastructure and services. The plan supports the University Academic Plan (2020-2025), which outlines York’s overall strategic objectives.
“I want to thank the advisory committee for their work and their passion, as well as to the entire York community who helped to develop and contribute to this plan alongside us,” said Asif. “I am confident that this community of changemakers can take this strategic research plan and bring it to life.”
