York’s Tom Gretes named OUA Coach of the Year

It’s a touchdown for York! Head Coach Tom Gretes was named the 2002 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Coach of the Year. He is also the conference nominee for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Frank Tindall Coach of the Year Award. The OUA Football Award Winners were announced late last week at the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in Hamilton.

As if that good news wasn’t enough, the OUA went on to name York defensive lineman Jeet Rana the OUA Lineman of the Year. He is also the league nominee for the CIS J.P. Metras Outstanding Lineman Award.

Gretes has just completed his second season as head coach and defensive coordinator of York football. This year, York”s record improved to 5-3 from last year”s 3-5 record. Gretes not only guided his team to a fourth-place finish and its first home playoff game in the program”s 35-year history, but its first playoff victory as well.

Rana was a key player on the Yeomen defense, a defense that allowed the third fewest points (112) in the OUA. On the field, Rana is a relentless competitor who was double and triple teamed by offenses throughout the year. He led the OUA and was second in the CIS with seven quarterback sacks. The fourth-year administrative studies student is academically oriented and focused on his goals and objectives.
