Soccer Lions look to continue winning ways in the inaugural Community Day games

Lions logo
York U Lions

The York University Lions soccer teams are rolling as the regular season winds down and they will be back on the pitch on Friday for the inaugural Community Day Games against the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks.

The women kick off the action at 11 a.m. at Alumni Field and the men will follow at 1:15 p.m. Both games can also be seen live online on OUA.tv.

The two squads have played a combined 20 games and have just one loss between the two of them, an opening day defeat by the women to the second-place University of Guelph Gryphons. They have earned points in every game since and are riding a season-best three-game winning streak in which they have outscored their opponents 6-1. The Lions won all three games they played last week, defeating the McMaster University Marauders 1-0 on an 89th-minute goal by Kiyani Johnson, followed by a 2-1 win over the Brock University Badgers and a 3-0 defeat of the University of Waterloo Warriors.

Johnson has scored in four of her last five games, beginning with a hat-trick against the Golden Hawks in their earlier meeting this season, and is now sixth in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) scoring with six goals.

The men know all about long streaks and are currently riding their best unbeaten stretch against OUA opponents in program history. The Lions have not lost to a conference foe in more than two years, a run that is now at 46 games and reaches back to Aug. 30, 2017. Last week they did not allow a goal in three matches, posting a 0-0 draw with McMaster and then a 5-0 victory over Brock and a 1-0 triumph over Waterloo.

Fans at Friday’s games have the potential to see plenty of goals if the first meetings between these teams are any indication. Three weeks ago, the Lions were in Waterloo, Ont., and won big, with the women posting a 4-0 victory and the men pouring in a season-high nine goals in a 9-3 triumph. The Lions men have not lost to the Golden Hawks since Laurier upset York in the OUA final in 2008, posting a 15-0-5 record since then and winning the last seven match-ups. The women’s teams split their season series last year in a pair of one-goal games that saw the home team win each time.

In addition to their offensive prowess, both Lions squads are also strong defensively. The men lead the OUA West with just five goals allowed and have eight clean sheets in 10 games, while the women are second in the division with six goals allowed.

All eight of those clean sheets came courtesy of Mike Argyrides, who has started all 10 games this season and earned York’s male athlete of the week award for making 14 saves and allowing zero goals in three games last week.

Laurier’s soccer teams have struggled this season and have matching 1-6-3 records. The women recorded their lone win over the University of Windsor Lancers in mid-September and the men picked up their victory against the Western University Mustangs the week prior.

After Friday, the Lions each have three games remaining. They will head to Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., on Sunday to face the Algoma University Thunderbirds before the final weekend of the regular season. They will be in London, Ont., to face the Mustangs on Friday and will host the Lancers on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Alumni Field.

Inaugural Lions football Murton-Midea Memorial Tournament raises more than $40,000

Members of the York University Football Alumni Association

The York University Football Alumni Association hosted the inaugural Murton-Midea Memorial Tournament on Sept. 21 and raised more than $40,000 for a new scholarship in memory of two former Lions football players, Jesse Murton and Alex Midea.

The two were teammates in 2011 – Murton as a fourth-year receiver and Midea as a rookie offensive lineman. In the following years, they were both diagnosed with leukemia and lost their lives to the disease, on April 24, 2017, and Dec. 5, 2018, respectively.

Members of the York University Football Alumni Association together with families of the late Lions football players Jesse Murton and Alex Midea

It was a beautiful fall day at Alumni Field, and more than 100 football alumni, friends and family members came out to play, watch and support the memorial tournament. All funds raised that day will be directed to a brand-new scholarship, the Murton-Midea Memorial Scholarship, that will be awarded to a future or current player that best exemplifies the characteristics of tenacity, determination, leadership and compassion.

More than $21,000 was raised from 40 donors, and with a pledge from York University Athletics & Recreation to match the first $20,000, the fund now stands at close to $42,000.

Murton was a loyal member of the Lions football program for five seasons. He was a hard-working receiver who was dedicated to improving himself on the field, in the gym and in the classroom. He graduated with a degree in kinesiology and health science in 2013 and had moved to British Columbia to work at the Whistler High Performance Training Centre before his death.

Midea spent just one season with the Lions before his cancer diagnosis in 2012. The very first recruit current head coach Warren Craney signed at York, Midea was beloved by his teammates and known for his tremendous work ethic. He was the Lions’ first-ever recipient of the Tom Arnott Yeoman of the Year Award for Hard Work and Character, and he persevered in the classroom despite his illness, graduating with a degree in sociology in 2017.

The legacies of Murton and Midea were honoured at halftime during the team’s homecoming game on Saturday, Sept. 21, with members of both of their families in attendance.

York Lions welcome the McMaster Marauders to Alumni Field this Saturday

Lions logo
York U Lions

The York University Lions football team is back in action at home on Saturday afternoon as the squad welcomes the No. 5 nationally ranked McMaster University Marauders to Alumni Field.

This contest represents the Lions’ inaugural International Student Festival, where York University students from around the world will get to see football up close, many of them for the first time. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Fans unable to make it to the stadium can also watch live online on OUA.tv.

The Lions are still looking for their first win of the season and will be in tough against a solid McMaster squad that is one of the strongest in the country.

The game promises to be a defensive battle as both teams have so far been stronger on that side of the ball. The Marauders rank third in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) in yards allowed, at just 332.3 per game. They lead the league with nine interceptions and are third with 10 sacks. The Lions have given up 396.7 yards per game, good for seventh in the conference.

McMaster has the OUA’s top two tacklers, linebacker Nate Edwards and defensive back Nolan Putt. York’s leaders are linebacker Damian Jamieson and safety Jacob Janke.

The offence will take place primarily through the air, as both squads are in the top four in the OUA in passing yards per game and at the bottom in rushing yards. The quarterback duel will see York’s Brett Hunchak go up against McMaster’s Andreas Dueck, who are fifth and second, respectively, in passing yards so far this season. Luther Hakunavanhu leads the Lions with 16 receptions for 277 yards, while Dueck’s favourite target has been Michael Bazzo with 18 catches for 195 yards.

The last time the Lions were home, they played a tight game against the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks that ended 18-10 in favour of the visitors. Last week, they were defeated by the University of Guelph Gryphons 53-19 in a game that was only separated by a touchdown (26-19) when the fourth quarter began.

The Marauders are coming off a loss last week to the powerhouse Western University Mustangs, the two-time defending Yates Cup champions who currently rank second in U SPORTS at an undefeated 3-0. The Marauders tied the game at 17-17 early in the third quarter before the Mustangs pulled away with 17 unanswered points to win 34-17.

Prior to that contest, the Marauders won their first two games of the season, defeating the Gryphons 25-10 in the opener on the road and then the Ottawa Gee-Gees at home by a 35-22 score.
