2017 York Cares United Way Campaign deadline extended to Dec. 31

The Wine Pull fundraiser

As of Dec. 6, York University faculty and staff have contributed close to $128,000 to the 2017 York Cares United Way Campaign. The amount raised represents 69 per cent of the 2017 goal of $185,000.

To help the University reach its goal, the York Cares United Way Campaign organizers have extended the campaign deadline to Dec. 31. They were able to offer the extension thanks to an initiative put forward by a group of the United Way’s most dedicated supporters and volunteers. The group has offered up to $600,000 to match all donations of $1,200 or more, and will match increased contributions from existing leadership donors. This initiative will help “double the love and double impact of contributions” made to the 2017 York Cares Campaign.

At the start of the campaign, all York University faculty and staff received a personalized email that contained a customized link to a personal contribution page. On Dec. 7, a reminder email complete with the link will be sent out to all faculty and staff.

The United Way is a powerful and effective charity and funds raised have a significant and measurable impact in the community. Did you know that a contribution of just $100 provides a daily snack (for three weeks) for 30 children and helps promote healthy eating? A donation of $480 provides a senior citizen with a weekly visit (for one year) from a friendly, trained volunteer who encourages independent living. A contribution of $500 provides funding and support for a week-long hot breakfast program for more than 50 deserving children. A leadership donation on $1,320 provides 10 weeks of swim lessons for 12 children and with matching, 24 children would receive swim lessons.

York U
Vari Hall

The following is a message to the University community from Jeff O’Hagan, vice-president of advancement:

Today, on Giving Tuesday, as generous individuals across the country choose to support causes close to their hearts, we are inviting the York University community to make an impact for future generations of students.

For York U students, donor support can mean the world. Thanks to thousands of donors including faculty, staff, alumni and students, York University is developing opportunities that transform the student experience through a focus on its key pillars of access, connectedness, excellence and impact. The need for support is more urgent today than ever before and Giving Tuesday offers a chance to change students’ lives for the better.

As a member of the University community, you play a vital role in helping York University take advantage of the many possibilities that lie ahead of us. Each of the initiatives below addresses specific areas within University where your donation can make a difference and help prepare students meet the challenges of a changing, global landscape.

  • York University Fund – supports the University’s area of greatest need (including student financial aid, learning spaces, academic programs, internship and research opportunities).
  • Glendon Alumni Fund for Indigenous Students – a critical resource that promotes that success of Indigenous learners and lets alumni share the experiences they enjoyed while studying at Glendon.
  • Salon francophone – provides a positive and relaxed environment where students can complete their studies, connect with fellow Glendonites and improve their overall French skills.
  • Adopt-a-Lion Fund – a means of supporting a specific York Lions team while providing all student-athletes with additional resources to compete at the highest possible level.

If you are interested in pledging your support to any of the projects listed above, please visit our online donation form.

Faculty and staff can also support York University on Giving Tuesday through the 2017 York Cares United Way Campaign. For more information, visit http://advancement.yorku.ca/2017-united-way-campaign.
