The Lassonde School of Engineering at York University hosted its fourth annual Undergraduate Summer Student Research Conference on Aug. 15, with more than 70 students participating. Students showcased the diverse research projects they’ve been working on throughout the summer, with five oral presentations and 53 poster exhibits.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education towards Sustainability at York University, and highlights the work of Charles A. Hopkins, who has held the role of Chair since 1999.
This year’s award recipients are: Michelle Chin-Dawe of Regenesis; the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) York University Student Chapter; the York University Performance Facilities technical team in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design (AMPD); and AMPD Professor Ian Garrett and his Centre for Sustainable Practice in the Arts.
The next event in the Scholars Hub Speakers Series will feature Jose Etcheverry, associate professor, Faculty of Environmental Studies, on May 28 with the presentation “Experimental Learning for Sustainability: Canada, Algeria and Chile.”
University Professor Dawn Bazely will discuss the food security and its role in in building a sustainable future. She will also share some botany basics to help you understand the importance of native biodiversity, March 28.

On Feb. 26, Schulich School of Business Professor Charles Cho will present the next Sustainability Seminar. He will explore the persistent gap between corporate sustainability talk and practice.
The third installment of the Sustainability Seminar Series, launched in October 2018 by York University’s President’s Sustainability Council, will explore the topic of atmospheric pollution in the Athabasca oil sands region on Jan. 31.
