The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice on Nov. 11, 1918, ending the First World War. At 11am on that day, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare.
Remembrance Day honours the men and women who were killed during the two world wars and other conflicts. Previously known as Armistice Day, it was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War.
The York community is invited to attend York University’s Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 10. The ceremony will take place at the Harry Arthurs Common under the York flagpole, from 10:45 to 11:15am. Those planning to attend the ceremony should meet in the Vari Hall Rotunda at 10:30am, at which time the piper will lead the procession to 
the flagpole. Following the ceremony will be a screening of the award winning short film The Road of the World, directed by York film student Ryan Knight (left).
As a winner of the Nation al Film Board’s Make Shorts, Not War! competition, Knight was a youth videographer for the Veterans Affairs Canada’s youth delegation to Belgium and France, in commemoration of the 90th anniversary of The Battle of the Somme. Following the screening, Knight will discuss his experiences and answer questions.
