To honour the memory of Qian (Necole) Liu, York University is creating a scholarship and planting a tree in her name.
The 23-year-old York English-language student from Beijing was found dead in her apartment April 15.

A funeral will be held tomorrow at the Jerrett Funeral Home, 6191 Yonge St., at Steeles Avenue, at 10am. Visitiation is from 9am to 10am. Note that under Chinese tradition, bright colours such as red and yellow should not be worn. Black is preferred.

Today, a condolence book will be placed at the Red Zone Desk in Vari Hall from noon to 4pm for anyone who wishes to express their sympathy. Staff and students of the York University English Language Institute (YUELI), where Ms. Liu studied, were the first to sign the book.
Later this week, a tree dedicated to Ms. Liu will be planted in the Founders College courtyard during a small ceremony attended by YUELI teachers and students. At the base of the tree, they will place a rock with a plaque honouring her memory.
York has also created the Qian Liu Scholarship in her memory. The $5,000 prize will go to the YUELI student who has demonstrated the highest academic achievement in their previous studies and has achieved the highest level of proficiency at YUELI.
The first scholarship is expected to be presented to a student enrolling this September.
