Positions in the ranking is based on a scientist’s D-index (Discipline H-index), which only includes papers and citation values for an examined discipline.

As a professor of sustainability and Hewlett Packard Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility, Matten expressed surprise at being ranked so highly on law and political science list; however, his work is read, cited and used by many people in this field.

“I am so happy that the direction I took in my work gets recognized beyond the business and management world,” said Matten, who is also the Schulich School of Business associate dean of research. “As a younger scholar I struggled with the fact that I use political science, sociology, and other theoretical approaches which are not bread-and-butter in management to advance these questions of corporate social responsibility (CSR). It made me a little bit of an outlier. But in some ways, it seems to have paid off.”

Matten has published 29 books and edited volumes, and has authored more than 90 journal articles and book chapters, which have won numerous prestigious awards. In 2018 he was ranked No. 44 in the “Top 100 Corporate Social Responsibility Influence Leader” ranking – he was the only academic scholar on the list alongside CEOs and CSR leaders of Unilever, Google, Apple etc. In 2019 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Schulich as well as the York Research Leader Award.
