Book launch celebrates the life and work of Herman Daly

A highly anticipated book by York University Professor Emeritus Peter Victor titled Herman Daly’s Economics for a Full World: His Life and Ideas is the first biography of Herman Daly that imparts important considerations on his extraordinary life and contributions to the field of ecological economics.

The book will launch with a virtual celebration on Nov. 24 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. GMT (2:30 to 4 p.m. EST), and the event is part of the 2021 Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science, hosted by the University of Surrey in partnership with York University. Experts on economics and sustainability will participate as speakers, including  Daly, Victor, Katherine Trebeck, Tim Jackson and York Professor Ellie Perkins.

Victor has expertise in ecological economics and sustainable development. He has worked for 50 years in Canada and abroad on economy and environment as an academic, consultant and public servant. His work on ecological economics has been recognized through the award of the Molson Prize in the Social Sciences by the Canada Council for the Arts in 2011, the Boulding Memorial Prize from the International Society for Ecological Economics in 2014, and his election to the Royal Society of Canada in 2015.

Herman Daly’s Economics for a Full World, based on his steady-stay economics, has been widely acknowledged through many prestigious awards and prizes. Drawing on extensive interviews with Daly, this biography presents a unique insight into his life from childhood to the present day,” says Victor. “It also gives a comprehensive account of his foundational contributions to ecological economics and the extraordinary relevance of his full world economics to solving the economic problems of today and tomorrow.”

Daly is an American ecological economist and professor emeritus at the School of Public Policy of the University of Maryland. He served with great effect as senior economist at the World Bank from 1988-94. In 1996, he was awarded the Right Livelihood Award for “defining a path of ecological economics that integrates the key elements of ethics, quality of life, environment and community.”

This book launch is an opportunity to become familiar and inspired by the substantial contributions of Daly, a leading figure in ecological economics. York University is has partnered with the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP) for this event that brings leaders in ecological economics and well-being to a broad audience, including students and researchers in economics, environmental studies, environmental science, and public policy and to the public at large.
