The UNOSSC was established to promote, coordinate and support South-South and triangular cooperation globally and within the United Nations system.

The South-South Ideas Paper Series collects evidence-based empirical research focused on advancing the increased understanding of pertinent international development issues in the global south. These are independent papers authored by think tanks, academia and researchers from the south with a key feature of pooling knowledge and expertise of think tank, research institutions, academia and experts to tackle the knowledge gaps in South-South Cooperation (SSC) and Triangular Cooperation (TrC). The diverse perspectives presented through this series can be fully leveraged to enrich the understanding of member states and inform their decision-making in SSC.

By publishing these papers, the UNOSSC aims to advance knowledge and sharing of ideas pertaining to South-South Cooperation in the Global South. The series is managed by senior research/programme advisor of the UNOSSC, Hany Besada.

“I am honoured to be appointed to this advisory role for the research work of the UN Office for South-South Cooperation, because this research has the potential to support important new ties of international cooperation and mutual learning between countries and peoples of the South, and to introduce new ways of understanding and of doing, from south to north,” said Chin. “The re-envisioning and re-casting of what is possible, with the south making important contributions. Research findings that are resources of strategy and hope, for more sustainable and just global development.”

The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), hosted by United Nations Development Program (UNDP) since 1974, was established by the UN General Assembly with a mandate to advocate for and coordinate South-South and triangular cooperation on a global and UN system-wide basis. UNOSSC receives policy directives and guidance from the General Assembly and through its subsidiary body, the High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation. UNOSSC submits its strategic planning frameworks to the UNDP, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) Executive Board for approval and funding. The director reports to the UNDP administrator and has also been appointed envoy of the secretary-general on South-South Cooperation.
