Student Community & Leadership Development’s (SCLD) most anticipated event of the year – YU Got This! – is moving online and will take place June 8, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. This event is free and all are welcome. Pre-registration is required. For the registration link and more information on the event, visit https://healthed.scld.yorku.ca/whats-happening/.

Presented by SCLD Learning Skills Services and Health Education & Promotion units, YU Got This! focuses on equipping students with the skills and tools they need to manage their stress and well-being before they start exams.

At 2 p.m., YU Got This! kicks off with a welcome panel featuring The Learning Commons (Libraries, the Writing Centre, the ESL Open Learning Centre and Learning Skills), and Health Education & Promotion will highlight how each of their services can support remote learning and academic success.

Drop-in sessions (i.e. breakout rooms) will begin at 2:30 p.m. with various topics presented by professional staff and peer leaders on time management, online exams, utilizing academic resources, understanding assignments and practicing healthy habits.

Learning Skills Specialist Nicole Joron expresses her commitment to supporting students in their remote learning environments. “We look forward to bringing the community together each semester at YU Got This!,” said Joron. “This summer, we are focusing on supporting students with remote learning. Students will have the opportunity to connect with students, staff and faculty while learning about campus resources, building academic skills and engaging in well-being activities.”

Rumia Owaisi, a peer health educator, explains the importance of supporting students during this transition from in-person to online learning as a result of COVID-19. “With the sudden switch from in-person to online learning, many students are finding themselves to be overwhelmed by this change and isolated from meaningful connection. We are hoping YU Got This! will be an opportunity for us to foster connection between students. To make this possible, we will be facilitating some fun and engaging activities that will allow students to go from restless to re-energized.”

YU Got This! has become a tradition at York University that students look forward to each semester. Past sessions have involved students interacting with therapy dogs, a popular service provided to help students reduce their stress leading up to exams. The therapy dogs return through a virtual therapy dog room provided courtesy of St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog Services.
