The following is a message to the York University community from York University President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton:

I want to take a moment to update our community on the recent disappointing news that Metrolinx is stopping GO Bus service to our Keele Campus effective Jan. 5, 2019.

I understand the serious financial and commuting time concerns that many of our community members are facing. Please know that the University continues to advocate for the implementation of full fare integration with transportation agencies to reduce the financial burden on our students, faculty, and staff. We continue to have conversations with the Province, Metrolinx and York Region Transit.

We have let YRT know that we would welcome their return to campus until fare integration is achieved and we are awaiting their response. We have also asked Metrolinx to reconsider their decision to stop service to our campus until fare integration is achieved.

As a long-time member of Metrolinx’s Smart Commute program, our 60,000 person community has demonstrated a commitment to sustainable commuting, including public transit. We have taken important steps to reduce the use of single occupant vehicles to campus, and we continue to provide support on campus to community members with mobility challenges.

I will continue to advocate for better transportation solutions for all members of our community.
