Lassonde School of Engineering Professor Tom McElroy has received the 2015 Patterson Distinguished Service Medal, awarded in a ceremony on May 31 at the annual Canadian Meteorological and Oceonographic Society congress meeting in Fredericton, NB. The medal recognizes outstanding work in meteorology by a Canadian.

This award is named in honour of John Patterson, a distinguished meteorologist who was director and controller of the Meteorological Service of Canada from 1929 to 1946, a crucial period in the development of Canada’s weather service.

McElroy is the Industrial Research Chair in Atmospheric Remote Sounding at Lassonde School of Engineering, where he provides leadership in the design, building and deploying of new and innovative remote-sounding instruments.

“This is a well-deserved award for one of our most distinguished researchers, whose career is an inspiration to many young researchers at Lassonde,” said Lassonde School of Engineering Dean Janusz Kozinski.

For 45 years, McElroy has been a leading member in Canadian and International meteorological science through advancements in research and technology in the field of atmospheric studies.

McElroy works with graduate students at Lassonde to design and test measurement instruments for space and atmospheric studies.
