The Lassonde School of Engineering has formed a partnership with one of India’s most prestigious academic institutions.
The bilateral agreement with IIT Roorkee – part of the Indian Institutes of Technology – will provide a launching pad for new collaborations and projects jointly led by Lassonde researchers and their Indian counterparts.
“ITT Roorkee is a world-class academic institution, and we are very happy to be establishing a long-term, meaningful partnership,” said Lassonde’s Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, Professor Spiros Pagiatakis, at a signing ceremony hosted at York University last month. “Lassonde and IIT Roorkee have a shared sense of purpose and a growing sense of mutual trust between our people. The possibilities for our partnership are already very promising.”
Professor Pradipta Banerji, director of IIT Roorkee, gave a presentation outlining the priorities for the partnership with Lassonde and joined Pagiatakis to put pen to paper on the agreement.
The memorandum of understanding (MOU) includes plans for visiting international scholars, student exchanges and the development of experiential education abroad programs, together with the reciprocal participation of IIT Roorkee professors in research units at Lassonde.
The MOU with ITT Roorkee represents a further strengthening of the Lassonde School’s partnership with a variety of universities and research institutions in India. Last year’s Lassonde Research Mission to India included a visit to IIT Roorkee by Lassonde School of Engineering Dean Janusz Kozinski and a delegation of the school’s professors.
IIT Roorkee, located north of New Delhi in Uttarakhand, is more than 150 years old, making it India’s oldest engineering college. The institution received IIT status in 2001 and currently has 18 academic departments covering engineering, applied sciences, humanities & social sciences and management programs, with a strong emphasis on technological education and research.
