York University Observatory provided more than an evening view of the sky on April 24 for one lucky couple. It was also the setting for a starry-eyed Anthony Antan (BBA ’10) to pop the BIG question to longtime love Maria Rego (BBA ’10).

A few days before the big night, Antan designed a special commemorative set of tickets to the observatory, planned activities that included a trivia session and a tour of the facility. The stage was set with the help of York University physics and astronomy Professor Paul Delaney, Observatory staffers Atifa Syed and Jen Mehrnoush Zomederis, and photographer Anthony Rego.

Happily for the couple, the romantic evening went smoothly as planned. The clear evening provided a perfect opportunity for Antan and Rego to gaze at the sky overhead. After seeing a few individual stars with the help of their observatory tour guides, Antan asked his first BIG question of the evening: “Could you show us a Nebula?” The telescope was adjusted to reveal a dazzling multitude of stars. Then, while Rego admired the starry sight, her soon-to-be betrothed had the lights turned off and the music turned on before dropping to one knee to ask his second BIG question of the evening: “Will you marry me?”

Teary eyed, she agreed. The engaged couple, who met while in elementary school and went to high school and York University together, left the observatory that night with their eyes set on the stars and a future together.
