Reduce stress, cultivate creativity through mindfulness meditation

Sunflower

Do you want to reduce stress more effectively or cultivate creativity, attentiveness and tranquility? Want to gain the support of group meditation and on-the-spot personal instruction?

The York University Psychology Clinic will offer three meditation programs this spring. If you want an activity that can make your brain healthier, come to one of the groups to learn and practise mindfulness meditation.

To register for any of the following three meditation programs, visit the York University Psychology Clinic website for each program’s registration form.

Program A – Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (MB-CBT)

MB-CBT draws a powerful “synergy” from two important behaviour-change methods. East meets West in ancient meditation methods and groundbreaking research from the cognitive neurosciences. Whether you want to learn to meditate or strengthen current skills, these sessions provide a stimulating environment in which to practise and explore the powerful impacts and benefits that are possible.

The first session will take place Tuesday, April 28.

Group leader: Paul Ritvo

Location: York University Psychology Clinic, Room 102

Time: 5:30 to 7pm

Fee: $180 for nine sessions ($75 for students with valid ID)

(For participants with extended health coverage for psychological services, the fee should be reimbursable; for students with the YFS health plan, the fee is reimbursable by session with a note from your family doctor.)

Unable to attend in person? Join the MB-CBT group online

This group was piloted last spring and proved very successful. You can participate from any Internet-linked computer with sound capacity. The online course content is identical to the Tuesday-night group. Group members found it helpful to have answers to questions spoken and typed so that responses could be critically reviewed during the days between groups.

This six-week program will start Thursday, May 7.

Location: Your Internet-linked computer (URL to be provided after registration is complete)

Group leader: Paul Ritvo

Time: 5:30 to 7pm

Fee: $120 for six sessions ($30 for students with valid ID)

Mindfulness Meditation – Friday Group Practice Sessions

In this six-week program, you will practise mindfulness meditation with a discussion of different strategies that can help you become more mindful throughout the day. The program is designed to help you gain the support of the group while you try different strategies to help cultivate mindfulness.

The session will be led by two facilitators who are not experts in meditation. They are each on their own journey of trying to find ways of incorporating more mindfulness into their lives.

Facilitators: Susan Goodfell, organizational development consultant, and Louise Hartley, director of the York University Psychology Clinic

Time: Fridays between noon and 1pm beginning Friday, May 1

Location: York University Psychology Clinic, Room 102

Fee:  $120.00 ($30.00 for students with valid student ID).
