Children aged eight to 16 could have the time of their lives at this year’s Summer Sport Camps, run by Sport & Recreation. York is providing a chance for your children to hone their sports skills in a series of week-long camps with start dates of July 7, 14, 21 and 28. Registration is now open for the York Lions Sport Camps and Diabetes Sport Camps.

Children are tutored at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels at camps in basketball, soccer, tennis and a multi-sport camp. Fees are $250 per week per child, with additional costs for lunch and extended hours. Sport & Recreation is offering a special discount for those registering their children by June 1.

The Diabetes Sports Camp run by York Kinesiology and Health Science Professor Michael Riddell has been providing young people with type 1 diabetes a learning experience that teaches independent understanding and management of diabetes.

This unique program is seamlessly integrated with each sport camp and is designed to enhance the quality of life for young persons with diabetes through sport, physical activity and physical fitness in a distinctive camp experience with their peers. Campers with type 1 diabetes are integrated with other non-diabetic campers of the same age range for most of the day, but will also be grouped back together at points in the day for blood glucose monitoring and to share stories about active living with diabetes. The Diabetes Sports Camp will be running July 7 to 11 and July 14 to 18. Participants will have access to nursing staff, athletic therapy and clinical exercise physiologists.

Here are a few more details about the camps:

  • Low instructor participant ratio.
  • Grouping according to age and ability.
  • A daily recreational swim.
  • Participation in the Lifesaving Society’s Swim to Survive program.
  • Lunch service included, with lunchtime supervision ($30 per week).
  • Extended drop-off and pick-up service ($25 per week).
  • All campers receive a York Lions Sport camp T-Shirt.

The camp team consists of head and assistant coaches of York varsity sports teams; certified coaches and skilled instructors; varsity athletes; and students in the School of Kinesiology & Health Sciences program. In addition, there will be experienced students from York’s Athletic Therapy Certification program on site during all the camps. All sport camp staff are experienced in working with children, have completed in-house training requirements, are Standard First Aid and CPR certified and are screened through the vulnerable persons police check.

Registration is now open.
