The Glendon Summer Language Institute is offering a new intensive Japanese language immersion program. The non-credit, live-in program takes two weeks to complete.
All communication during the program will be in the Japanese language and are designed to create a short, powerful interactive learning opportunity. Students will speak Japanese with instructors, live-in assistants (Japanese undergraduate students majoring in Japanese as a Second Language education in Japan) and Japanese guests from Toronto. The program is designed for students seeking to use Japanese language in meaningful ways and is designed to build skill and confidence.
The program is designed around one thematic unit (食shoku: eating/food) It provides students with opportunities to experience various cultural activities in daily life while being fully immersed in the Japanese language community. It includes various excursions to Japanese-related sites in Toronto.
Each day, students will participate in morning class sessions and in afternoon and evening socio-cultural events. For example, students will cook their Japanese lunches under instructors’ guidance. They will speak in the Japanese language, with no English. The experiences are interconnected with the textbook work and other activities to provide an immersive, challenging and rewarding experience.
The program is strongly recommended for: Students who are going to go to Japan for the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program; other English as a Foreign Language teaching programs; for travel; those want to reactivate their Japanese language skills; and for those individuals who like to learn language through practice in immersive situational and experiential context.
The program runs May 26 to June 6 (with participants arriving May 25 and departing June 6). The fee for the program is $2,100 CAD (room and board, tuition, activities and materials) or $1,800 CAD for tuition, activities, materials and board (live-at-home option).
