Are you a visual artist? The York University Student Centre is hosting an art competition open to all York students worth $20,000 in awards and art materials.

The 13 completed works of art will hang in the Student Centre’s food court mezzanine, meeting rooms and in the east and west student lounges on the Keele campus.

The deadline to submit mural proposals, not the actual piece, is Feb. 28. There are 13 awards of $500 up for grabs based on a nine-member jury’s choice for special merit. In addition, the Student Centre will cover the cost of art materials up to $300.

Suggested themes for the Site Specific Mural Art Commissions include: contributions of Islam, sustainability and woman empowerment. The jury will be comprised of visual arts faculty members, visual arts undergrad and grad students, and representatives of the Student Centre.

York student Joy Wong’s Building the Next Generation was also a winner last year

Paintings, photo ink-jet prints on canvas, digital prints and mixed media are all welcome. The work will be displayed for two years.

The judging will take place March 12 and the winners will be announced March 13. The winners will have until July to complete the pieces, with July 21 slated as the day the pieces will be installed in the Student Centre.
