York conference declares: Bullying Stops Now!

Teachers and experts who study bullying will meet Monday to discuss the latest research, best practices and legal issues related to bullying, as well as the proposed Accepting Schools Act for Ontario.

Debra Pepler head shotThe Bullying Stops Now! Conference, hosted by York University’s Faculty of Education, will take place Jan. 30, from 8:30am to 3:30pm, at the Markham Convergence Centre, 7271 Warden Avenue, Markham.

School administrators and teachers will be provided with key information toward the creation of an effective school plan to combat bullying.

In addition, Debra Pepler, a distinguished research professor of psychology in York University’s Faculty of Health and an internationally respected expert on bullying, will speak about cyberbullying and social media.

The program is as follows:

  • Bullying in Canadian Schools: A Legal Update – Eric Rohr, a partner and national leader of the Education Focus Group with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, who advises school boards, independent schools, community colleges and universities on a range of education law issues, including student discipline, human rights, freedom of information and special education. (9 to 10:15am)
  • Bullying Prevention: It’s Up to All of Us! – Debra Pepler. (10:30 to 11:45am)
  • Peer Relationships in a Virtual World – Debra Pepler. (12:30 to 1:15pm)
  • Peacemakers conflict resolution program – Professor Esther Fine, of York’s Faculty of Education, and Roberta King, an independent filmmaker with King Squire Films. (1:30 to 1:50pm)
  • Planning and Innovating for Positive Change – John Morrison, coordinator of leadership programs in the Office of Research & Professional Development at York’s Faculty of Education, formerly a principal in the Durham District School Board and founder of the nationally recognized, student driven, Culture of Peace program. (1:50 to 2:45pm)
