Surprise winner of Wimbledon expected at Rogers Cup

Petra Kvitova may not be a recognizable name in tennis circles yet, but after beating favoured Maria Sharapova to win the 2011 Wimbledon title last weekend, that may change. This rising star is expected to compete this August for the Rogers Cup in Toronto, making the play on the Rexall Centre courts at York even more exciting.

This was the first major title win for the 21-year-old Kvitova, who now ranks number seven in the world. This Czech player is the youngest to win Wimbledon since her rival Sharapova took the crown at age 17.

Sharapova, now ranked within the top five, is also expected at the Rogers Cup, presented by National Bank from Aug. 6 to 14, as are the Williams sisters, who are back after missing most of the 2010 tournaments, and number-one ranked Caroline Wozniacki.

Qualifying rounds will take place Saturday, Aug. 6 and Sunday, Aug. 7. Tickets are available for both qualifying sessions. Opening night will take place on Monday, Aug. 8.
