Top York undergrads profiled in latest YorkU magazine

Eight of York’s brightest students grace the cover of the December 2010 issue of YorkU magazine, now available on York’s news racks and in a new digital edition.

The eight students stand out as the top achievers in the University’s seven undergraduate Faculties. Eight out of seven? There was a tie for top billing in the Faculty of Fine Arts. The students each scored the highest cumulative GPA in their Faculty at the end of second year to qualify for YorkU‘s eighth annual listing.

Profiled by writer Martha Tancock are Nadia Warsi from the Faculty of Health, Oleg Nicolaev of Glendon, Faculty of Science & Engineering student Alina Beliavsky, the Schulich School of Business’ Maxwell Serebryanny, Faculty of Fine Arts students Katy Ha and Meara Tubman-Broeren, Rajat (Nick) Sabharwal of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies and Fatima Khan of the Faculty of Environmental Studies.

A companion story revisits the top students from the December 2005 edition to find out how they turned out half a decade on.
Elsewhere in the 36-page issue are profiles of York researchers Gail Fraser, a leading campaigner in the fight to protect the environment from the threats posed by offshore drilling, and Sarah Flicker, who studies teen sex and HIV prevention. There is also a look at the new Learning Commons in Scott Library and a feature on York’s winning cricketers, along with regular departments.

The December issue is the first to go online with York’s new system for digital editions, produced by Toronto-based Mygazines. This system can be used by other units of the University at reasonable cost to display publications originating in a PDF.
