AGYU launches catalogue in Brazil

On Sept. 20, the Art Gallery of York University (AGYU) will release a catalogue of Brazilian artist Carla Zaccagnini’s 2008 exhibition no, it is opposition. in São Paulo, Brazil.

The catalogue for the Brazilian artist’s exhibition, no, it is opposition., presented at the AGYU in the fall of 2008, is designed by Lisa Kiss. The text, in Portuguese, Spanish and English, includes essays by Zaccagnini and Emelie Chhangur, AGYU assistant director/curator.

The title of Zaccagnini’s no, it is opposition. is a palindrome; it reads the same forward and backward. The palindromic title hints at the exhibit’s conceptual structure, which the artist describes as “forking paths and crossroads.” The catalogue documents the exhibition in which the viewer enters twice, encountering the same work again but from a different perspective.

While the exhibition was all about doubles, the book launch at Galeria Vermelho is a threesome, with artist, curator and designer there to sign books. The release coincides with the 29th São Paulo Biennial.

A related book, Catalogue Traduit, is an artist’s book published by Zaccagnini for the exhibition a few years ago.

Both catalogue and book can be purchased at the AGYU in the Accolade East Building, or online.
