Web portal wins kudos from students for convenience, organization

York’s new student Web portal, my.yorku.ca is a hit with students, judging by comments received since the site launched on Oct. 8.

The new portal offers a convenient one-stop shop on the Web. The portal consolidates and streamlines all the information that is most important to York students into one easy-to-use Web interface. The portal is the initial release of a year-long joint project by York’s Division of Students and Computing & Network Services (CNS). For the complete story, see the Oct. 9 issue of YFile.

Most of the students who commented on the portal appreciated how it brings together all of the Web capabilities that they use regularly during their time at York. “This allows me to be more organized and have everything linked in one page as opposed to constantly going back and forth through the York U Web site,” said Dianna Valko. “It is really helpful for organizing as well as keeping in touch with what is going on around campus. Thanks!” said Ekaterina Cooper.

Student Manisha Hassan found the portal “very easy to navigate and very helpful,” while Amanda Bordonaro said, “I love being able to create to-do lists and see when my assignments are due all on the same page.”

“This is fabulous! The York Web site has always been superior to other universities’ but this makes it even more convenient,” said Maria Kogan.

Most of the comments mentioned the portal’s customizable layout and convenience and, in a sure indication of success, some were even suggesting additions they’d like to see in future. “I would also like to see my.yorku.ca give students the ability to connect directly to security if needed,” said Franklyn Earle-McFadden. “As well [my.yorku.ca] should allow for course enrolment.”
