Memorial service on June 11 for environmentalist Charles Caccia

Family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend a celebration of the life of Charles Caccia, former MP for Davenport, who passed away following a stroke on May 3. (See the May 14 issue of YFile for the full story.)

Caccia was one of Canada’s strongest advocates of environmental policy, participating in many international initiatives and serving as the federal minister of the environment in 1983. The memorial service will take place on Wednesday, June 11, at 7:30pm at the Oakwood Collegiate Institute, 991 St. Clair Ave. West, in Toronto. Donations are being accepted for the Charles Caccia Award in Sustainable Development, a scholarship fund benefiting graduate students in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University who share Caccia’s passion for an environmentally sustainable future.

The goal is to raise $50,000 and leverage matching funds from the University’s Graduate Support Matching Program and the government’s Ontario Trust for Student Support. This would create a permanently endowed fund and, with matching funds, provide graduate students five times the financial impact in perpetuity. More than $10,000 has been raised to date.
