Glendon honours students who make a difference

Students Clara Wong and Cliff Davidson have been awarded Glendon’s Student Service Awards for their contributions to student life on York’s Glendon campus. The students were fêted during a special award luncheon on April 10, hosted by Louise Lewin, Glendon’s associate principal (student services), at her official residence on the campus and attended by Glendon Principal Kenneth McRoberts.

Chosen from a pool of 13 nominees for the annual Student Service Award – the largest ever and approximately double last year’s list – Wong and Davidson have played active roles in the Glendon community. Lewin noted that the two winners had unknowingly nominated each other for the awards.

Wong, a third-year international studies student, received the award for her outstanding participation in student clubs and activities. She has been vice-president of the Glendon Model UN Club (GMUN), and organized this year’s GMUN conference. She was also acknowledged for her part in mediating and advocating for students on the petitions committee and Faculty Council. Moreover, she has been active in several other clubs and the residence social committee as well.

A third-year student majoring in English and sociology, Davidson has also completed his D-TEIL certificate for teaching English as an international language. He will soon depart for a year of studies in the Netherlands. Since arriving at Glendon he has been the founder and president of the student group Glendon Outdoors; a councillor on the Glendon College Student Union; ambassador for Positive Space; note-taker for students with disabilities; and a writer and designer for Protem, Glendon’s student newspaper.

“The increased participation in nominating candidates for the awards is a reflection of an overall increase among the entire student community in student activities: clubs, social events, cultural activities, student management, Faculty Council, and others,’ said Lewin. Wong and Davidson were chosen by a three-member committee composed of Aaron Doupe, manager of student affairs, Glendon campus; Fiona Kay, manager of Glendon student financial services and Lewin.
