Fashion show meets top model competition

York’s community newspaper Excalibur is hosting its second annual fashion show and York’s Next Top Model (YNTM) competition, March 5-6, at the Student Centre on York’s Keele campus.

This year’s theme for the fashion show, which will be held Wednesday, March 5, at 2pm, is “Global Chic” to celebrate both diversity and fashion. Although the event is open to all, guests will have a chance to buy celebrity photos of themselves, for a $2 donation.

The models, organizers and audience members will get a chance to relax and mingle at the official Global Catwalk After Party, set for the Undergound’s Pub Night, on Thursday, March 6, at 6pm. Those who support Casey House with a minimum $2 donation will be granted access to an exclusive VIP room. The organizers will also be selling $2 draw tickets to win a $50 gift certificate from Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

All proceeds from the event will go towards Casey House, a world-renowned facility founded in 1988 that provides care for persons infected and affected by HIV/AIDS through a range of palliative and supportive care services in residential hospice and community programs.

The fashion show will feature designers such as Jean Machine, FCUK and American Apparel. The show’s models will be 20 male and female contestants for the second cycle of the YNTM competition, which will be judged by representatives from the Toronto Star, Sway magazine, Eye Weekly and Fab magazine.

Last year hundreds of students gathered to watch the event and this year promises to be even bigger, with more models, more designers and more surprises for the contestants and the audience. The Toronto Star, Sway magazine, Eye Weekly and Fab magazine will be in attendance to cover the event.

Last year’s female winner, York alumnus Shelina Ebrahim (BA ’07), has gone on to a professional modeling career and is currently working in Tanzania. Who knows what awaits this year’s male and female winners?
