First place in women’s basketball on the line tomorrow night

The York Lions women’s basketball team will play its biggest game of the season tomorrow night, starting at 6pm, at the University of Toronto.

The Lions (17-3) and the Varsity Blues (16-4) square off at the University of Toronto Athletic Centre Sports Gym. (The gym is located at 55 Harbord St., on the south-east corner of Spadina and Harbord.) With first place in the eastern division of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) on the line, the York Lions, if they win, will clinch top spot in the division in regular season play and secure home-floor advantage for the entire playoffs.

If Friday’s game is anything like the teams’ previous meeting, fans will be in for a treat. On Jan. 26 at York, the Lions held on for a dramatic 73-70 victory over the hard-charging Varsity Blues before a packed house at the Tait McKenzie Centre

Meanwhile, the men’s teams from the respective schools will lock horns Friday at 8pm. The Lions gave the Varsity Blues, ranked fifth in the nation, a scare two weeks ago at York, ultimately losing 70-64 to the University of Toronto.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, at 6 and 8pm, the Lions teams will remain downtown to meet the Ryerson University Rams at Kerr Hall (31 Gerrard St. E). The Lions men’s team is trying to catch the Rams for fifth place in the OUA East.
