President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri has reappointed two longstanding deans at York University to lead the Schulich School of Business and Osgoode Hall Law School for the next five years. The appointments for the new terms, which were made after extensive consultation, were approved by the executive committee of the Board of Governors yesterday and take effect July 1, 2008.
"I am delighted to confirm the reappointment of Dezsö J. Horváth as dean of the Schulich School of Business and Patrick Monahan as dean of Osgoode Hall Law School. They are both first-class leaders who have helped make their schools among the finest in the world," said Shoukri.
"Dean Horváth’s fifth term is unprecedented and he is entitled to be very proud of his achievements in building the Schulich School of Business to the global pre-eminence that it enjoys today. As dean of Osgoode Hall Law School, Dean Monahan is leading a renaissance in Canada’s oldest and largest common-law law school," said Shoukri. "I warmly congratulate them on their past achievements and look forward to even greater things!"
Dezsö J. Horváth (right) has led the Schulich School of Business since 1988, making his tenure one of the longest at any business school in North America. He first came to Schulich in 1976 as a visiting professor, after teaching at the University of Umeå, Sweden, where he had completed his MBA and PhD in management. An associate professor at York in 1977, he became a full professor in 1981 and currently holds the Tanna H. Schulich Chair in Strategic Management. One of the founding members of the Strategic Management Society, Horváth has published numerous books and articles on strategic management and international business, and has been engaged by major corporations and governments as a consultant in these fields. A recipient of the B’nai Brith Canada Award of Merit and a former Fellow of the World Economic Forum, he has served as a member of the Board of Advisors for the Canada Global Leadership Initiative of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and has also served as a member of the Premier’s Council for Economic Renewal of Ontario. He was named International Dean of the Year in 2004 by the Academy of International Business.
Patrick Monahan (left), who will be entering his second term as dean of Osgoode Hall Law School, graduated from Osgoode as an LLB gold medalist in 1980 and joined the faculty in 1982. He holds a BA from the University of Ottawa, an MA from Carleton University and an LLM from Harvard University, and is a member of the Bar of Ontario. Monahan is a recognized authority on constitutional law, Canadian federalism, and administrative law. From 1986 to 1990, he was senior policy adviser to the attorney general and premier of Ontario respectively, where he played a key role in the negotiation of the 1987 Meech Lake Accord. He has frequently provided legal advice to major public sector organizations, including all three levels of government, federal royal commissions, government agencies and the auditor general of Canada.
