York tops national soccer rankings

For the first time in University history, the York Lions men’s soccer team has been ranked number one in a poll of Canadian Interuniversity Sport coaches.

In the weekly rankings released Oct. 1, the Lions (8-0-2) jumped to No. 1 from No. 2 after tying the fourth-ranked Western Mustangs, 1-1, and beating the Windsor Lancers, 4-2, in a two-game road swing on Sept. 29 & 30.

The Lions sit just ahead of the second-ranked Carleton Ravens, who also are undefeated in Ontario University Athletics play at 9-0-1. The Trinity Western Spartans, ranked No. 1 for the past three weeks, dropped to No. 3 after losing their first game of the season.

The Lions travel to Waterloo to face the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday (3:15pm) before returning to York to begin a season-ending three-game homestand against Windsor on Sunday, 3:15pm, at York Stadium.

The Lions women’s soccer team (9-1), meanwhile, maintained its No. 5 ranking after recording wins over Western and Windsor this past weekend. The women’s team also plays games at Laurier on Saturday at 1pm and at home against Windsor on Sunday at 1pm.
