Foebel inks deal in Germany

Former York Lions basketball star Jordan Foebel (BA Hons. ’07) will play professional basketball in Germany this season after signing a contract with USC Freiburg (Sport University of Freiburg, Germany) this month.

Competing in Division 2B in Germany, the 6-foot-10 centre will begin regular season play on Sept. 29 after concluding his five-year career at York this past season.

"It’s great for him and it’s great for us," Lions head coach Bob Bain said. "[Foebel’s career at York] was certainly very satisfying for him. He came in with a whole lot of potential and he realized it to a great extent. He did that through hard work."

Foebel averaged 14 points, 16th in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and 8.9 rebounds, third in OUA, this past season, while also leading the league in field-goal percentage (61.9 per cent) for the fourth time in the past five seasons. A second-team OUA East all-star in 2006-2007 and a first-team OUA East all-star in 2004-2005, Foebel played in three National Championship Tournaments during his time at York.

The Lions open the pre-season with two games against NCAA teams this weekend at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The Lions play host to the Morehead State Eagles on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 8pm, before entertaining the Louisiana State University Tigers on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 3pm.
