Remember Dec. 6, 1989

A ceremony will be held tomorrow at York to remember 14 female engineering students massacred 17 years ago at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique.


Dec. 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It is the anniversary of the day in 1989 a male gunman separated the14 young women from their male classmates and shot and killed them. Since then, vigils and services like this one have been held every year at campuses across the country.


York’s ceremony begins at 3:45pm in the Central Square Bear Pit. Afterwards, participants are invited to walk to the Local 112, Canadian Auto Workers’ union hall at 30 Tangiers Road for a tribute and reception.
