Shalom-Salam@York holds special screening of Checkpoints documentary

Student organization Shalom-Salam@York will hold a screening and discussion of the film Checkpoints with co-producer Amit Breuer, today at 3pm.


The screening of this award-winning 80-minute film, made in 2003 and directed by Yoav Shamir, will take place in 135 Vanier College, followed by a discussion at 5pm in Founders Assembly Hall, 152 Founders College. There will be a question-and-answer period and reception featuring Middle-Eastern Food beginning at 5:30pm.

Shalom-Salam@York will be exploring the issues raised in the documentary and asking Breuer, an Israeli, about why she made the film and how this documentary contributes to building peace in the Middle East. The film is in Arabic, Hebrew and English with English subtitles.

Checkpoint has been shown at more than 60 film festivals around the world and received many awards, including the VPRO-Joris Ivens award at the International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam, the Best International Documentary Feature Award at the Hot Docs – Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto and the Cinematography Award at the Tel Aviv International Documentary Film Festival in Israel in 2004. The film was produced by Breuer, of Amythos Films, and Edna and Elinor Kowarsky, of Eden Productions, with the assistance of The New Israeli Foundation for Cinema & Television & Noga Communications.
