Lions’ hoops double crowns Staff, Faculty and Alumni Appreciation Night

Sport York’s third annual Staff, Faculty and Alumni Appreciation Night takes place this Saturday as the York Lions women’s and men’s basketball teams battle cross-town rivals, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

Held every January, the event is free to all York staff, faculty and alumni as well as their families and is meant to celebrate and acknowledge all the hard work and support these groups provide the University and campus.

The evening features great prizes, entertainment and instant giveaways as well as fine Ontario University Athletics (OUA) basketball action. Prizes include a Telus cell phone, York Lions t-shirts, Warner Brothers prize packages and gift certificates for the Underground, Blade and Casey’s Bar & Grill.

All the action gets underway at the Tait McKenzie Centre with the women’s game at 6pm, followed by the men’s match-up at 8pm.

The York women’s team is in first place in the OUA East Division with a 9-2 record, while Toronto sits in third spot with a 6-5 mark. In the first meeting of the season between the teams in November, the Lions prevailed with an 89-56 victory.

On the men’s side, the Lions have been plagued by injuries and sit in fourth place in the OUA East Division with a 5-6 record. The much improved Varsity Blues boast a 9-2 record and are tied with Carleton and Ottawa for the division lead.
