Reviewing the Maclean’s University Rankings report

Hot on the heels of The Globe and Mail’ s “University Report Card,” which reported a B+ grade given by York students in “overall satisfaction,” Maclean’s magazine has released its annual “University Rankings” report.

In the comprehensive category, York ranked No. 3 for awards per full-time faculty and for the percentage of its budget devoted to scholarships and bursaries, and No. 4 for student retention and proportion of students who graduate.

York’s overall ranking slipped from eighth to 10th in its category. In the comprehensive reputation category, high-school principals and guidance counsellors, heads of organizations, CEOs and corporate recruiters ranked York sixth overall and fifth in the sub-category “Leaders of Tomorrow,” the same ratings as last year.

Other Ontario universities, including Wilfrid Laurier, McMaster, Ryerson and Trent, also dropped in their respective categories by up to five places. Unlike the Globe and Mail survey, the Maclean’s listing does not sample the primary users of postsecondary education – students.
