New students coming to York can pick up important information that could make their first year more successful and enjoyable by attending early orientation sessions held by their designated colleges during August.
Right: Many new students coming to York this fall can attend academic orientation sessions beginning next week
Each college holds its own unique academic orientation sessions that include various activities and workshops designed to help students succeed at university. Four of York’s seven colleges offer summer sessions in advance of those held by all colleges during Welcome Week (Frosh Week), Aug. 29 to Sept. 6. The academic orientation sessions help students learn about connecting with students in their Faculty, planning a career, and choosing courses and professors that match their interests.
Among the most beneficial of these sessions are the segments on study skills that provide first-year students with tips on how to take effective notes, keep up with course readings and manage time and money. Students are also invited to take one of the 90-minute daily tours of the Keele campus that run until Aug. 26 or a 60-minute tour of the Glendon campus, plus an optional residence tour if they are planning to live on campus.
Information on the orientation sessions was mailed to students in July. The first summer session will be held Aug. 3 at Stong College, followed by sessions at McLaughlin, Bethune and Vanier. Details on the individual college sessions are accessible on the Student Community & Leadership Development Orientation Web pages. Some sessions are open to students’ parents.
Additionally, parents will have an opportunity to chat online and get answers to their questions from Student Services staff on Aug. 16 from noon to 2pm. Information for parents is available on the Orientation Web site and includes a link where parents can register for e-mail updates on start-of-the-year activities.
In the week before the start of classes Sept. 7, students have further opportunities to prepare during Frosh Week. There is also a special orientation day for international students on Aug. 31 and the York Day Information Fair on Sept. 6. Information on these events is also available on the Orientation site.
