Volleyball Lions triumphant

The York University men’s and women’s volleyball teams improved to a perfect 8-0 on the season with a pair of victories last week.


The York Lions men’s volleyball team defeated Toronto 3-0 and Windsor 3-1 last week. The Lions, the only undefeated team in Ontario University Athletics (OUA), will face Laurier (1-6) on Wednesday in Waterloo and McMaster (6-1) on Friday in Hamilton.


The women’s squad defeated the four-time defending OUA champion Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 on Wednesday and the Ottawa Gee-Gees 3-2 on Sunday. York will face the OUA’s only other undefeated team, the Laurier Golden Hawks (9-0), on Wednesday in Waterloo. The Lions will also play McMaster on Friday (6-2).

The men’s and women’s basketball teams swept weekend doubleheaders with Windsor and Western. York freshman guard Tut Ruach finished with 21 points and four assists, while centre Jordan Foebel added 17 points and 13 rebounds as the men’s squad defeated Windsor 71-61 on Friday night. Foebel had 24 points and 20 rebounds for his second straight double-double in Saturday’s 79-59 victory over Western. York (4-2) has won three in a row and will host Toronto (2-4) and Ryerson (0-6) this weekend at the Tait McKenzie Centre.


Christa Lodge led the Lions women’s basketball team with a team-high 17 points, while shooting an impressive 71 percent from the floor in Friday’s 68-50 win over Windsor. Brenan Rurak, who scored a game-high 21 points, helped power York to a 72-57 victory over Western. York hosts Toronto and Ryerson this weekend.


The Lions men’s hockey team won a pair of games on the weekend defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees 5-4 in overtime on Friday and McGill 4-2 on Sunday. Fifth-year veteran Shane Nash had three goals and two assists in the two games. York will close out the first half of the season at Concordia on Friday and UQTR on Saturday.


The women’s hockey team dropped a pair of games to Queen’s, while the badminton team finished fourth at the OUA Championship. The women’s water polo team will compete in the OUA Final Four Championship this weekend at Carleton.
