New director for York refugee studies centre

The Office of the VP Research & Innovation has announced the appointment of Professor Susan McGrath as the new director of York’s Centre for Refugee Studies, effective July 1. She will be assuming the directorship upon the completion of the term of the current director, Professor Peter Penz.

Involved in many local refugee issues, McGrath is an active participant with several community-based refugee organizations. She also maintains a dynamic and collaborative research agenda covering a variety of issues that includes work with marginalized groups.


McGrath’s involvement with York is wide-ranging as a faculty member and, formerly, as a student. An alumna of the Faculty of Environmental Studies (MES ’90), she has been a member of the School of Social Work in the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal & Professional Studies since 1997 and a member of the Centre for Refugee Studies for the last three years.
