York alumna competes at world water polo championship

Former York University water polo player Christi Bardecki (left) (BA Hons. ’01) recently competed at the 2003 World Aquatic Championships in Spain as a member of Canada’s women’s water polo team. Canada finished fourth after losing a hard-fought battle to Russia in the bronze medal game.

Bardecki was a member of the York women’s water polo team from 1997 to 2000. During that time, York dominated Ontario University Athletics (OUA), winning two championships. Bardecki was twice named the Most Valuable Player at the championship tournament.

With the National program since 1996, Bardecki was a member of Canada’s silver medal winning teams at the 1999 Junior World Championship and the 2002 Commonwealth Championship. She was Canada’s leading scorer at the 1999 Junior World Championship.

Bardecki will next compete for Team Canada at the Pan American Games, August 1-17 in the Dominican Republic. The gold medallist receives an automatic berth in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
