New masters for Vanier and Winters

Vice President Students and Alumni Bonnie Neuman has announced the appointment of Professor Carole Carpenter as master of Vanier College and Professor Marie Rickard as master of Winters College for a five-year term beginning July 1, 2003.


Carpenter takes over from Professor Helen Doan, who served two consecutive terms as master of Vanier College and is now retiring. Professor David Johnson served as acting master during Doan’s recent sabbatical term. Rickard follows Professor Gottfried Paasche, who was master of Winters College for the past three years.


Carpenter (right) is an active Fellow of Vanier College who has shown continuing support for the College. She has held several college roles, serving as senior tutor, academic advisor, and on various committees within Vanier College.


Carpenter has been interim director of the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies and the director of a York foundations course, and has chaired a wide range of senate and Faculty committees.


A member of the Division of Humanities (Faculty of Arts), Carpenter’s research has focused on children’s literature, folklore and Canadian studies. She is cross-appointed to the Faculties of Graduate Studies in Communications & Culture, Education, English, Ethnomusicology and Interdisciplinary Studies.


Rickard (left) is an active Fellow of Winters College and has served as the college academic advisor for the past year. She is professor in the Department of Film & Video, Faculty of Fine Arts, a York graduate and former Winters College student.


Rickard’s experiences include teaching for the York University English Language Institute (YUELI), teaching and producing in film, screenwriting, high-school teaching, and teaching in Spain and in Canada before coming to York.
