Joanna S. Rainbow

Harriet Lewis, university secretary and general counsel, is pleased to announce that Joanna S. Rainbow will be joining the Office of the University Secretary and General Counsel as an assistant counsel on Jan. 2, 2003. Shirley Katz, associate to the counsel, completes her sabbatical Dec.31, 2002 and is returning to academic duties in the Faculty of Arts.

Rainbow is a graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford (BA Hons. ‘85), City University, London (Diploma in Law, ‘88) and McGill University (LLB, BCL ‘91), where she was a member of the editorial board of the McGill Law Journal. She clerked in the Quebec Court of Appeal, was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1993 and has practised both privately and as crown counsel, Civil Division, with the Office of the Attorney General of Ontario, handling a wide variety of matters before courts and administrative tribunals on behalf of several ministries. In addition to her regular practice, Joanna has served as a part-time deputy judge of the Toronto Small Claims Court. She brings to York a great enthusiasm for the University and its work, a solid knowledge and experience of the academic and legal environments, a fluency in French and German.

Julia Shin-Doi, a graduate of the University of Toronto (BA), and York (LLB ’92),  is working in the office as a part time assistant counsel, primarily assisting with matters pertaining to research. Gina Papageorgiou, who has been of great assistance to the office over the last nine months, is returning at the end of this week to her partnership at McCarthy Tetrault.
