Neil Morrison

Neil Morrison, first dean of York’s Atkinson College (now Atkinson Faculty of Liberal & Professional Studies), died on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at the age of 88. He had been admitted to hospital last week suffering from pneumonia.

Mr. Morrison was a leader in the field of adult education in Canada and was responsible for the development of many outstanding broadcasting features of the CBC. For 10 years he was the national supervisor of talks and public affairs broadcasts and, later, he organized and directed the audience research and statistics division of the CBC. In addition, he was a staff member of the Canadian Association for Adult Education, and a member of the Canadian Political Science Association, the American Sociological Association and the American Association for Public Opinion Research.

At one time, Mr. Morrison was co-secretary of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism. He later left the commission to become Chair of the policy advisory committee for former Liberal finance minister Mitchell Sharp.
