Diversity essential in media

“Your own cultural, racial, religious background or gender will affect how you cover the story,” York University course director in anthropology Carol Tator, told a panel on racism in the media at Concordia University, reported The Gazette in Montreal Oct. 23. She said every journalist has cultural biases, and diversity among journalists allows for a broadening of the range of viewpoints.

Jorge Nef wins teaching award

Jorge Nef, a fellow of the Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean at York University, has won this year’s Latin American Award for best educator, reported the Guelph Mercury Oct. 22. The award was presented in Toronto to Nef, 60, who has been a professor at the University of Guelph since 1975.
