Consciousness-raising

Evan T. Thompson, Canada Research Chair in Cognitive Science and the Embodied Mind, had a visit this week from VP Research & Innovation Stan Shapson. The latter presented Thompson with a framed letter of congratulations signed by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.

Thompson, whose bold and innovative research delves into cognitive science, analytical philosophy of mind and phenomenology, hopes his findings will advance scientific and philosophical understanding of human consciousness. What is conscious thought? he asks. Can we use it to control physical functions?

Author of several groundbreaking books and articles related to cognitive sciences, Thompson is the North American director of the Association for Phenomenology and Cognitive Sciences, and executive editor for “Philosophy of Mind” of the Canadian Journal of Philosophy.
