Natasha Walsh, a York University graduate student in music, is one of eight recipients of the George Black Membership Scholarship presented by the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada.
The award goes to students attending Canadian post-secondary institutions studying and developing congregational song in their studies. Recipients of the award receive a year’s membership in the Hymn Society and an 18-month membership to the Southern Ontario Chapter of the Hymn Society.
She was nominated by Professor Stephanie Martin.
The scholarship was created in 2003 in memory of George Black, a president of the Hymn Society, to continue leadership of congregational song.
Walsh is a PhD candidate in musicology and ethnomusicology at York University.
Her work will also be featured at the 61st National Conference of the College Music Society, where she was invited to present her paper “Choral Works of Canadian Church Music Composers: European Influence & Canadian Identity.” The conference is set to take place in Vancouver, B.C. in October.
