The fourth annual Joshua Yasay Charity Basketball Tournament will take place July 16 at York University’s Tait Mackenzie Centre on the Keele campus. The tournament will run from 10am to 6pm.
Joshua Yasay (BA Spec. Hons. ’11) was a graduate of York University’s criminology program. A passionate volunteer, Yasay was working towards a career with the police force. Tragically, at just 23 years old, he became one of two innocent bystanders killed in Toronto’s July 2012 Danzig Street shooting.
To commemorate him, the Joshua Yasay Charity Basketball Tournament was created to raise funds for the Joshua Yasay Award for Excellence in Criminology and Community Service.
This fun-filled day brings together the Yasay family, friends, community members and York students for 5-on-5 teams that will compete among each other. Eventually the winners take on a challenge from the Toronto Police Services recreational basketball team. Last year there were approximately 100 enthusiastic supporters in attendance at this event.
The cost to register is $40 per person or $320 for a team of eight.
