Results of Red and White Day photo contest competitions announced
After what was possibly the most spirited and enthusiastic Red and White Day in the history of York University, the results are in for the Spirit Selfie and Best in Class photo competitions.
The contests have become a much-loved Red and White Day tradition.
In the Best in Class contest, professors and students were invited to coordinate wearing York gear or red and white, and take a photo of their spirit in action Nov. 13. For the Spirit Selfie contest, individuals and groups captured their York University spirit in a photograph for the contest.
The competition was fierce and the judges certainly had their work cut out for them.
Dozens of students, staff and faculty submitted pictures, with one winner selected in each category. Contest entries for the Best in Class were judged by faculty representative Ida Ferrara, an associate professor in the Department of Economics. Ferrara was joined by Vaishnavy Senthilnathan, a third-year student in Schulich’s Business Administration program, and staff member Maria Fisher, executive assistant to the assistant vice-president, finance and CFO.
The judges for the Spirit Selfie Contest were Faculty of Graduate Studies Dean Barbara Crow, Sarah Millington, an administrative officer in the Office of the University Secretariat, and Zabeda Oumer-Haji, a student in the Health Studies program. Winners of both competitions will receive coffee and treats for their class or office.
The winning Best in Class photo came courtesy of students in Professor Rebecca Bassett Gunter’s Physical Activity and Health Promotion class, KINE 3645.
The winner of the Spirit Selfie contest was submitted by Lisa Hoffman, an administrative assistant from the Department of History. In this submission, Department of History staff dressed theatrically to show their York spirit.
There were many other spirit-filled photos taken by York U community members on Red and White Day, which can be found on various social media channels under the hashtags #YUSpirit or #YUSpiritSelfie.
At the Red and White Day festivities, participants had the opportunity to celebrate the success of the Lions Women’s Tennis team – the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) champions – and the Lions Men’s Soccer team, winner of both the OUA and Canadian Interuniversity Sport titles this year. York also hosted special guest, alumnus and comedian Gerry Dee (BA ’92) who spoke to students, faculty and staff about his time at York and life after graduation.
