Business students recognized for community work

Students from York’s Schulich School of Business were recently applauded for racking up a record 20,000 hours of community service as part of  last year’s Schulich Ambassador Program.

One student, Nancy Thandi, BBA class of 2013, was selected as the top ambassador and awarded a merit scholarship based on participation, overall academic performance and for outstanding recognition by other University faculties, departments and service units.

The number of students signing up to contribute to York and the wider community has increased every year since the Schulich Ambassador Program was created in 2007.

In addition to the Top Ambassador Award, 115 Participation Certificates for completing more than 40 hours of community action and 78 Leadership Certificates for completing more than 80 hours in one year were also awarded.

Launched in September 2007, the Schulich Ambassador Program was created with the intent to provide Schulich BBA/iBBA candidates with an opportunity to complement their in-class education with extracurricular involvement.  The goal of the program is to provide an opportunity for all current Schulich students to develop into charismatic leaders who are passionate citizens, excellent communicators and outstanding role models. In the 2010-2011 academic year, the Ambassador program reached new heights with the dedication of more than 680 undergraduate students contributed to community action.

Schulich Ambassadors are full-time students that contribute to the York and wider community in many ways, from participation in student government and clubs, to community outreach and leadership conferences, to recruitment and career events.

This past year’s team was so outstanding that in addition to the overall Top Ambassador Award, a new award was created to celebrate student achievements in all year levels – the Top Ambassador: Best in Class.

The Top Ambassadors: Best in Class recipients for 2011 were:

  • Class of 2013 – Joanna Silva, BBA
  • Class of 2014 – Maryna Batova, BBA
  • Honorable mentions: Matthew Cheuk, iBBA class of 2014, and Zahra Kassam, BBA class of 2014.
