Patrick Monahan, York’s vice-president academic & provost, has issued the following memorandum to members of the York community:
I invite applications or expressions of interest for the position of associate vice-president, teaching & learning, in the Office of the Provost.
Our colleague, Professor Norma Sue Fisher-Stitt (left), has served admirably in this portfolio since it was created nearly four years ago, and will be completing her term on June 30. Among Norma Sue’s many accomplishments are the successful launch of the Atkinson Centre for Mature & Part-time Students, leadership in the development of the Learning Commons in the Scott Library, the successful launch of the Transition Year Program for students who have experienced social and financial barriers to attending university, the development of the academic component of the Fall Co-Curricular Week, and working with the College Masters, faculties and others on initiatives such as peer mentoring, orientation and residence life. I am enormously grateful to Norma Sue for the energy, commitment and leadership she has brought to this portfolio and look forward to working with her over the remaining six months of her term.
I am launching a search process, internal to York, to identify Norma Sue’s successor. This document offers a brief description of the responsibilities associated with the portfolio, as well as a link to further detailed information on current projects or initiatives now under way. Given the importance attached to teaching and learning, engagement and the student experience in both the White Paper and the current draft version of the University Academic Plan, the AVP teaching & learning will be a key member of our leadership team and play a critical role over the next three years in advancing our strategic academic priorities. The appointment will be for a three-year term, commencing July 1, and carries a full teaching release.
